hey guys
I have a question for those of you who have small dogs as pets. how do you clean up after them if you can't see where they've done it? I'd like to get a small dog like a chiuahah sometime in my life...probably not anytime soon seeing I'm going to gdb next month for a guide dog, but sometime in my life, and I was just looking for suggestions on how one might clean up after them if you can't see. is it possible to litterbox train them or something?

They sell some sheets of thin pads at stores like Wal-Mart or probably also some pet stores, and that's what I use for my chihuahua. I'm not sure if there are certain brands or what they're actual name is, if someone else might know what they're called, but yeah, I put one on the floor and Star just does her business on it when she's ready and then you just throw it away. I use one pad for each day, and that usually works out fine. Before that, I did actually have a box where I would put some old paper or newspaper, and she would go on that, and of course I'd change that often also. That worked out fine also, so those are two ideas for you. Hope that helps. *smile*

they are called training pads and do work well my gf and i have a 7 month female shitzoo but when i take her out side her droppings are so small i really don't worry about it but if you need to the best thing to do i guess is when they stay in a spot for a little bit just check around the area they are at. hope this helps

you will also learn how to leash relieve your guide dog, so I don't see why your little pup can be taught the same thing. feed them regularly at the same time each day and keep their diet consistant. It becomes easy to predict wehn theyw ill need the loo.

thanks, ya'll. the training pads or the box with paper in it sounds like a good idea. how would you train them to do it there though?
I probably won't be getting it for maybe even a year...I have no idea. I'm just thinking of things I want in my life, and I've always wanted a small dog of my own, so at some point, lol. just looking for ideas, cuz that was really the only concern I had about it.

I have my dog tied up in a certain area or loose in a big crate. When I didn't, she would go on the regular floor even though she knew the pads were there. But then again, although I do spend time caring for and playing with Star, I admittedly don't spend as much time on actually training her as much as I probably should, so that's why I have to do that. But if you want to have it to where the dog can run around everywhere, of course, you'd need to take the time to train it on where it needs to use the bathroom, and it should learn and get used to it after awhile.

Well I will say from vary long and hard expearience with a beaggil that refuzed to be house trained, you will no ware the mess is because of the smell. That right there is a dead give away.
Also if your dog is smart they will act ashamed and start hideing and stuff to let you no, I did a poo, it's your job now to go find it and cleen it up.
If your dog poo's really bad on the carpet though there is a maltitude of carpet cleeners made just for pet messes out on the market.
2 great and oddvice places to look are
www.petsmart.com
and
www.petco.com
and another one that I really like is
www.drsfostersmith.com
All these websight's are vary blind friendly and the stuff is priced well.
Have fun!

Hey there!
gypsy was already housebroken when I got her. But she does on ocation have acsidents. usually, it's easy to find. and I just take a paper toul and rap it around my hand and feel for the spot and pick it up like that. gypsy usually goes to the door, and barks to be let out. she's good about it. hope I helped.

you did, thanks. the only thing about letting them go outside is, once they're outside in yoru yard, the stuff would build up if you didn't pick it up, and then it would be even harder. so I think I'd want my dog to do all their business inside if possible cuz then I wouldn't have to worry about trying to find it outside, lol. or maybe I could make a little area outside or something and fense it off with something, I dunno. I guess it depeds on what kind of place I was living in at the time, which I have no idea what that'll be. probably an apartment somewhere.

Daisy does that every now and then. I got her from an abusive owner! She runs on the floor so I usually knows when she needs to go. Or she will hide too. After a while you just learn when they need to go.
